The 1930 US Amateur at Merion Cricket Club (now called Merion Golf Club) is, of course, one of the most legendary tournaments in history. Bobby Jones did the unthinkable and won all four Majors of 1930. The Grand Slam. It had never happened before, and may never happen again.
To win the 1930 US Amateur, Bobby Jones had to defeat his good friend and Walker Cup teammate Jess Sweetser in the semi-finals. To some, it was the last real challenge for Jones, as Sweetser was seen as a much more formidable opponent than the man Jones would meet in the finals - Eugene Homans. In truth, no one was stopping Bobby Jones that week, as Jones rolled through Sweetser by the score of 9&8, and Homans 8&7.
Offered here is Jess Sweetser's actual semi-finalist bronze medal that he was awarded at the 1930 US Amateur at Merion. As far as semi-finalist medals go, this is almost certainly the finest such example in existence.
This medal was originally obtained from Jess Sweetser's Estate
