This is a truly rare opportunity to own an autographed cabinet card of one of the greatest golfers in history - John Ball, Jr. Ball dominated amateur golf - winning the British Amateur an unprecedented 8 times. Then he would shock the world by becoming the first amateur to win the Open Championship in 1890 - a feat that many believed could never happen. Ball won the British Open and British Amateur in 1890, which would not be replicated until Bobby Jones 4 decades later. This was also the first Open victory by a golfer born in England.
This exceptional late 1800s cabinet card photograph dates from the prime of John Ball's career. The reverse of this photo contains handwriting that reads "John Ball, Jr., Champion Golfer, Hoylake, Jan. 1899." When this autograph was apparently obtained in 1899, Ball had won 4 Amateur titles and the Open Championship. He would subsequently go on to win the British Amateur 4 more times. John John Ball, Jr. died in 1940.
